The Doctors

Dr. Brown is one of only 15 Damon Educators in North America, and 2 in Canada. As such he has lectured extensively at the Damon Forum, attended by Orthodontists from around the world.

Meet Dr. Duncan Brown

Dr. Brown graduated from the University of Toronto in 1975 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, and became certified as a Specialist in Orthodontics in 1978. Dr. Brown was one of the first Orthodontists in Calgary to use the Damon System, and has used it exclusively since 2003. He shares his experience and expertise with other Orthodontists and professionals, by lecturing regularly at the Damon Forum, Kodak Users meetings, Damon Users Meetings, the University of Alberta and the University of Manitoba. Dr. Brown, in conjunction with Crest® Oral-B®, helped develop Ortho Care Solutions – a program designed to boost oral hygiene practices among Orthodontic patients. The program is now being used by orthodontists across the country.

Duncan is an active member of the:

  • Canadian Association of Orthodontists
  • Alberta Society of Orthodontists
  • American Association of Orthodontists
  • Canadian and Alberta Dental Associations
  • Damon Study Clubs
  • Roth Williams Society

Duncan’s warm smile, sense of humor and relaxed attitude are characteristics his patients and staff love about him. It is not uncommon for his patients to greet him with a hug, and never a day goes by without hearing a resounding “I love this job!” echo throughout our clinic. Dr. Brown truly cares about all his patients and takes a personal interest in their lives. Because he is saddened when he sees children who require orthodontics and it is not available to them, Duncan has joined “Smiles Change Lives”. The Calgary chapter of this orthodontic charity has the goal of making treatment available to qualified families with needy children.

Dr. Brown has a strong community spirit, and contributes generously to many charitable organizations, including the Kids Cancer Care Foundation, Dentists without Borders, Cause Canada, Smiles Change Lives, and The Burns Memorial Fund. Duncan sponsors many sports teams, and supports the efforts of our young people in aiding those less fortunate than ourselves. He has worked for over 20 years in the Cleft Palate Clinic at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. His love for children is expressed by his involvement in the Alberta Children’s Hospital and his role as “Zippy” for the Shrine Clowns. Duncan is particularly gratified by the 65 former patients he has mentored into the profession of Dentistry, and 9 in Orthodontics, throughout his career.

Meet Dr. Dana Van Elslande

Dr. Dana graduated from the University of Alberta in 2004, with a Bachelor of Medical Science and a Doctor of Dental Surgery. From there she went on to complete a general practice residency at the University of Alberta Hospital, pursuing her interest in treating medically compromised patients, emergency management, and patients with special needs.

After this training, Dr. Dana completed her Masters of Clinical Science in Orthodontics, during which she took special interest in both facial asymmetries and the accuracy of 3D imaging. Her review on Mandibular Asymmetry is published in the American Journal of Orthodontics. Dr. Dana received the American Association of Orthodontics Award for exceptional interest in the development of the Oro-Facial Complex.

Dr. Dana is an active member of:

  • Canadian Association of Orthodontists
  • Alberta Society of Orthodontists
  • American Association of Orthodontists
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada
  • Canadian and Alberta Dental Associations

Dr. Dana was a patient of Dr. Brown’s when she was a child, and even today wears the retainer he gave her! Dr. Brown’s love of Orthodontics was infectious, and it was during her appointments at his office that she decided that Orthodontics would be her dream. Who knew they would become partners in Orthodontics. Dr. Van Elslande loves cycling, sailing, and anything that takes her to the mountains. She has an indisputable love for children, which is evident in her interactions with our young patients.
